Recently, a reader had some questions I thought worth sharing. I’ve updated the responses for context.
Q: What is the difference between existence and creation?
A: Existence is a sense created by awareness noticing itself. In self-recognition, we know we are. We experience this as the sense of Isness or being.
Creation comes after that. In seeing itself, consciousness expresses and creation emerges.
More expressed, existence becomes Amness (our Universe), then Iness (the ego or I-sense, I Am). We could say these senses of being relate to different koshas: Isness in the space of consciousness, Amness in the causal, and Iness with the intellect.
Q: Did the first creators get created or did they emerge?
A: That impulse to express or create is Shakti. The recognition of that impulse expresses Brahma as a creator being. And then it all branches out and expresses in more and more detail. In a nested space in creation, our universe emerges. That’s the causal level.
Q: Can existence exist without self-consciousness?
A: The first principles that led to consciousness, self-awareness, recognition, and expression are all because of Divine qualities.
The quality of liveliness stirs alertness, and with intelligence, lively alertness leads to self-recognition. That leads to the sense of existence. There is no sense of it prior, but the qualities that lead to it are inherent. They are in Brahman, prior to consciousness and expression. One can experience these qualities as the glow of Divinity.

Thanks, Dara! 🙏
I’ve found this story to be an interesting revelation on the topic of creation and absolute being and how they are intertwined. https://youtu.be/ztoUaJFEi8M?si=znITtUwpB7j-lydb
Thanks, Lew. Beautifully illustrated. And it illustrates the role of each in the nature of our experience. And the key role of balance in upholding creation.
