Last night I went to a presentation by Dr. Carl Calleman on the Mayan Calendar. He is one of the foremost authorities on the subject and many in the field count him as their mentor. He explained the nature and function of the calendar as a map of the energy of time and the changes taking place.
He places the completion of the calendar at Oct 23, 2011. Not based on the older understanding but on scientific research. Its also the date the Mayan elders subscribe to. But he also observes that the end date is not the most important aspect. Its the process. The energy of the evolution of consciousness.

Whats notable is the next cycle. For the current period, we’ve been experiencing Quetzalcoatl, Lord of the Light energy. He observed there was many celebrations of Oneness this year. The Breakthrough was the midpoint on May 22. We’re moving into Night 5, the 10th heaven, ruled by the Lord of Darkness. He suggested this would likely be a difficult period for institutions as the rising right brain energy (Indigo children, etc) will cause many left brain institutions to falter. The dates run from Nov 19, 07 to Nov 13, 08. The cycle after that is ruled by the goddess of birth…
This implies that if we think things seem to be speeding up, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet…
