The Power of Attention

The Power of Attention

There is the old saying: What you put your attention on grows stronger. This may seem abstract or New Age, but it’s a fundamental principle.

If we consider that the world arises from and in consciousness, then how we use our consciousness (attention) will influence what we’re experiencing.

In the current time, consciousness is rising. This means it’s becoming more lively, more alert. The power of our attention is thus increasing.

It also means that what is unresolved is rising to the surface to be processed and resolved. If we put our attention on its resolution, we can make rapid progress. However, if we instead put our attention into our reactivity to what’s arising, we’ll increase that in our awareness. This will expand it rather than help resolve it. We’ll see a world falling apart rather than one bringing things up to be healed.

The same is true in relationships. We can drift from love into a habit of seeing what’s wrong with our partner, what we’re reacting to. That increases in our awareness and we act accordingly. They experience us being this way and respond in kind. Cartoons often joke about grumpy couple dynamics, but we often cannot see it in ourselves. Division and strife increase as we forget why we fell in love with them in the first place.

We can see how important what we feed with our attention is, and what perspectives and narratives we come to believe. They determine our experience of the world and our quality of life.

Do you live in fear, regret, or anger? In a flat, boring world? Or in love, gratitude, and joy? You choose.
