Anita’s Love

A friend sent me an interview with Anita Moorjani. This reflected beautifully on the recent theme of Value. Most of us have spiritual experiences as a result of a practice or circumstance. But occasionally, someone gets a glimpse of truth through dying, then coming back to tell about it. These are called NDE’s or Near Death Experiences. I’ve mentioned the Mellen-Thomas NDE here a few times. Anita’s is quite different. While in a coma with terminal cancer, she heard everything around her. When her body formally died, she apparently didn’t leave but instead felt a great deal. Her deceased father … Continue Reading…

Core Values

What do you stand for? What are the values you operate from? One of the churches in my area is doing a survey of the community to set their Core Values. When you know your Core Values, decisions on projects, funding, priorities and so forth become much easier. Priorities, goals and practices all flow out of ones values. And they allow an organization to set their Vision and Mission as well. You may see such exercises as meaningless drivel. There are any number of organizations with fancy mission statements that are largely meaningless and unknown to most staff. But if … Continue Reading…

Remembering Dharma

In the past when I’ve spoken on Dharma, I generally translated it as Purpose. For example, in the traditional 4 Levels of Purpose (Universal, community, life period, and personal). However, on a deeper level, Dharma is that which sustains. It is in sustaining that our purpose can unfold. Dharma maintains a balance between creative and destructive forces, thus upholding creation. For example, when we act positively, we experience positive results (karma) but this throws off the balance. Dharma responds with feelings of satisfaction, restoring balance. This is the essence of evolution. (Bucky Fuller talked of Action, Reaction, and Resultant, a … Continue Reading…

Your Whole Life Is About Awakening

“Everything that happens to you from moment to moment happens because it has the highest probability of waking you up. I know that this idea might sound crazy, but there’s no getting around it. Your entire life has one agenda: awakening.” — Tom Stine This makes more sense if we consider all of reality exists as a process of self-knowledge, of waking more deeply to itself. This is of course reflected in every aspect of itself, including each of us. Davidya

Surrender Date

Recently, I had one of those curious experiences where I started to look at a different career direction, then the means in question vanished. Later that same day, I went to a talk on book publishing and was surprised by the dramatic changes in the industry. Independent publishers are now producing more titles than the traditional houses and Print on Demand dominates the market. All of this is driven by an unsustainable model in retail book sales where a large number of books are burned just a few months after printing. More to the point, there was a viable new … Continue Reading…

Memory Continues

Last month I spoke of the subtler values of Memory, what is called Smriti in Sanskrit. We could say consciousness is remembering itself through us. Reality is structured in the core intelligence of being. But the vastness of this remembering is rather hard to comprehend. And although it’s all one thing, this remembering is as if layered. Firstly, everything is being remembered in the eternal now, all at once. In every moment, everything has happened. All of the past, present and future is only now. This is not just events we might find in a newspaper, but everything experienced by … Continue Reading…

Lost Purpose

Spiritual writers often talk a lot about subjects like ego identification and the suffering that results from it. We may get the sense that ego is bad, but this is a misunderstanding of its role in evolution. In essence, there is a process of fullness collapsing into a point, then that point opening up back into fullness again. This is how fullness comes to know itself in every detail. In our own personal growth, we experience this collapsing into a point as the development of individuality. A clearly defined sense of local self. In the fullness of that we find … Continue Reading…

4 Levels of Purpose

Recently, I wrote about Intention and Purpose. In comments I touched on Jyotish. Today in a discussion with a friend, they mentioned the Vedic 4 arenas of life and a web site. The site turned out to have a great summary of the subject. In an article on Dharma, Dennis Flaherty explores the Vedic understanding of 4 levels of purpose and how that ties into castes, life periods and life arenas. In short, Dharma comes in 4 layers: 1) Universal (rita) – divine order or cosmic law, natural laws 2) Social (varna) – family and social responsibility (now degraded to … Continue Reading…

The Roots of Relationship, Part 2

Part 1 People thus show up in our life for 2 reasons. The first is to help us come to balance. To purify or complete things we may have held together. Perhaps we have an unfulfilled obligation or an unrequited love. Other people can also be a very profound mirror for ourselves, reflecting what we’ve been unwilling to see. Notice how we react to them. Strong reactions can indicate what we need to look at. They may also help us heal and find balance. We can release the nodes of holding that create an energetic mesh in our history. These … Continue Reading…

The Roots of Relationship, Part 1 of 2

Starting a new relationship can be a wonderful time. But beginnings can also be a little bumpy. Understanding the dynamics can help to avoid the pitfalls and establish a deeper connection. There are 2 aspects of relating we’ll explore – the karma or energy and the dharma or purpose. This dynamic is true of any relationship but as intimate relationships express this the most vividly, we’ll focus on that. Karma is action, kinetic energy, the flow of life. It functions in the surface values of life, through our thoughts, emotions and actions. We know the physical law that states that … Continue Reading…

I am the Stadium

Jim Carrey, speaking at an Eckhart Tolle event. He speaks about intention, why we’re here, how everything is happening inside you, and that I am everything and it’s so much fun… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qSTHPABoHc Jim shares an experience of “getting it”. I was the universe. Then loosing it and wanting it back and wanting to take as many there as he can. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIaY0l5qV0c

Our Gifts come from Our Suffering?

During a meeting with a friend of mine who’s a medium, we had a rather instructive conversation. She said that our pain and lessons bring us what we have to offer. Our gifts to others arise from where we have suffered. We can thus support others through that experience. This struck me as similar to the idea that you have to suffer to be creative, that art arises from suffering. I think there is something valuable to see here but we can understand life better by framing this a little differently. Often we can point to an incident in our … Continue Reading…
