Inner Relationship Focusing is the name of an awareness technique for emotional healing and accessing
“positive life-forward energy.” Ann Weiser Cornell and Barbara McGavin developed it from their own client practice and the Focusing work of Eugene Gendlin.
This work has in turn influenced the development of somatic practices, Trillium’s Inseeing, and more.
Changing our relationship to our experience is key for healing, processing experiences, effortless meditation, somatic therapy, karma, spiritual development, and awakening.
While this shift is very simple, it is experiential. We will not get there with the mind. There can be deep habits of being that resist such a shift. It can even feel unsafe.
CC Leigh showed me the book “The Power of Focusing” by Ann Weiser Cornell. My somatic therapy classes had discussed this work and I could see the threads in other things I’ve studied too.
The book led me to her website and a free course called “Get Bigger Than What’s Bugging You.”
If you’ve struggled with the shift to observing rather than being caught in your emotions, you may find the course an excellent resource. The simple classes are done and practiced over a 5 day period.
Then you’ll have some skill in shifting perspective on the content of your experience. That will facilitate everything else that follows. If it fascinates, you can take a longer paid course, but the free course gives you foundational tools that can help.
