One of the more interesting details about last nights talk by Deepak Chopra was that they’re opening the first branch of the Chopra Center in downtown Vancouver this winter. All of the things they’ll be offering are available here already – Ayurveda, yoga, meditation. They present it as taking your practice to the next level. That would certainly be true for many of the yoga class devotees around town in their Lulumon. The framework is his “Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga“.
(git yr free class with promo code CY9760 if you register before Aug. 5th)
It will be interesting to see what impact it has. All the fresh smiling young people in Chopra tshirts reminded me of the time in the ’70’s when meditation was all the rage and eastern sages were on mainstream TV talk shows. For some reason, this feels like a good sign.
Vancouver is also home to the Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education. Last year, they hosted an International Peace Summit with a rich range of speakers. Everyone from the Dalai Lama to Eckhart Tolle, Matthieu Ricard to Bob Geldoff. Even Blue Man. They discussed the Charter for Compassion, Word Peace through Personal Peace, and so forth.
There is an old saying: The means gather around sattva. They don’t call this Lotusland for nothing. 😉

I have never been to Vancouver. It sounds like it’s quickly becoming a spiritual magnet. Lotusland, indeed. I want visit, see what the energy feels like.
Hi Kaushik
The gulf islands off the coast of Vancouver are said to be one of the more sattvic places in the world. On one in particular, spiritual centers are being built. Tolle has a personal place there too.
Lotusland is actually a putdown by eastern Canadians for the lifestyle oriented west-coasters. But it suits. Its been rated the most livable city in the world for many years but it’s attraction also means the most expensive real estate.
The free promo code that you mentioned for chopra yoga centre in Vancouver, how can it be used? is it for one class?
Sorry – but that was for 2010. The Center doesn’t appear to have evolved as much as they were suggesting at the start but I’ve been away so thats unclear.
