On Dimensions

I often hear people refer to subtler layers of existence as other “dimensions.” As a dimension is a direction in space, this is a poor term to use.

It also gets muddy really fast. For example, if we call the astral another dimension, we’re suggesting it’s a line, a kind of squashed Flatland, not an open space. We’d have to give it 2 more dimensions to match the physical. Same with all the other layers. And yet this implies they’re all separate spaces.

Predominance

For some, unfolding knowledge of the world follows the path of the mechanics of perception. For others like myself, it follows the path of the dynamics of consciousness. The 2 approaches unfold different understanding of the world. There are also variations within each.

On the first path, we discover a version of what Samkhya describes. From the mind arises the 5 senses out of the observer side of consciousness. From the observed arises the corresponding 5 tanmatra or essences. The first comes out of sattva guna, the second from tamas.

Alice Down the Rabbit Hole

Peter Russell is a physicist I mention occasionally. We met at the SAND conference, but in less than desirable circumstances. On the plaza, he was confronted by someone seeking “The Answer” to all their suffering drama from “The Expert”. I stepped in and directly answered their question. But because they believed in their pain, they couldn’t accept the answer. Progress happens when we’re ready to hear. But that’s another story.
